Nintendo SNES Rival Super Scope

So it turns out that the commonly available Sega Saturn Stunner lightgun can be converted to play on the Nintendo SNES in lieu of a Super Scope accessory, as documented by Boojakascha. This circumvents the annoyance of having to rely on batteries and line-of-sight infrared signal by keeping the controller corded, plus it provides the opportunity to stick the gun's guts into something cool like a Nerf dart gun. This project was completed somewhere around Summer of 2019.

1. Right Side

Here's a shot of the finished product. A Nerf Rival Kronos was selected for the housing because the dimensions felt appropriate for a one-handed lightgun. Not too cumbersome but long enough to have the space needed for the interior circuitry, switches, etc.

On this side the button at the fore is the "pause" button found on the Super Scope.

2. Left Side

The Super Scope "cursor" button has been assigned to the fore of this side of the gun.

There was already an adequate iron sight molded into the top but a rail also allows for a laser sight add-on if so desired.

Much of the dart launching mechanisms were taken out or disabled since it didn't make sense to keep them or they were simply in the way.

3. Gutting The Gun

As mentioned earlier, nearly all of the original Nerf related material was to be taken out, but here's a picture of what things looked like before work was started.

The slide rack, dart launcher as well as the safety switch all had to go to make room.

4. Work In Progress

Work is often carried out with just a screwdriver, pencil and a pair of calipers.. until it's time to work digitally on the computer of course.

While one prototype part is getting 3D printed in preparation for a test fitting, another part will be in the design stage on the side.

5. New Parts

All of the yellow colored pieces represent the final build with the exception of the dark orange parts which were made to be more robust for the retention of the side buttons of the gun.

Special attention was paid to the mounting distance of the acrylic focusing lens with respect to its position ahead of the Saturn Stunner's light sensor, and this distance was preserved in the new mount.

6. Assembly

Since this was an early project for Magic Trashman Industries the wiring's a little messy but the parts are all in position, this gun is ready to be closed back up for testing at this point.

The primary switch (or fire button) sits in the grip where it will conveniently get hit by the trigger since its movement is an exclusive back and forth slide.

The pause and cursor buttons are also microswitches.

7. Back & Front

In the rear, a slide switch has been mounted to toggle the Super Scope fire mode (turbo, non-turbo) and from the front the focusing lens can be seen.

Because the Sega Stunner itself was a splendidly performing lightgun this Super Scope clone works just as well for its new life as a Super Nintendo accessory.
